Kina Beach, a small Nelson vineyard, has topped the Autumn Chardonnay tasting held annually by WineNZ magazine for the second consecutive year. It is the first time in the eighteen-year history of the magazine that any wine producer has won back-to- back titles in a tasting of the same grape variety.
The Kina Beach Vineyard Reserve Chardonnay 2011 was the only Chardonnay to be awarded five stars, beating off competition from throughout New Zealand. WineNZ Editor Martin Gillion says it is a stellar result, and attributes the double win to “the consistent quality of the fruit, the site and the skills of the winemaker leaning towards uniform quality”.
Alex Wall, Sales and Marketing Manager for Kina Beach Vineyard, says the result vindicates how well the Nelson region can make wines. “It is showing again and again that Nelson is capable of producing wines that are equal to, if not better than, those from New Zealand’s other key wine regions.”
The result follows last year’s five-star rating in Cuisine magazine, where the vineyard’s previous Chardonnay vintage, their Reserve 2010, was the only South Island Chardonnay to place in the top five.
